Months later, another message arrived for Fasel, this time from Ukraine. Researchers at a bat rehabilitation centre in Kharkiv had their own footage that seemed to show bats mating without penetration. In total, the team now had video from 97 mating events – 93 from the Dutch church and four from the rehabilitation centre. The author hopes that the exhibition will “encourage, and entertain, and enlighten” visitors. “I never dreamt, when I first started writing, that I’d have an exhibition going on in the British Library,” she says. “It does feel totally surreal”. You don't really hear the word much 'sexploitation' anymore, but it's just a by-product of 'exploitation' - films predominantly made in the 1960s and 1970s that exploited a certain element of storytelling to engage the cinemagoers' attention. At the time, British filmmakers needed to offer the public something they couldn't see on TV - and this tended to be material which wasn't allowed on the small screen - namely violence, horror, martial arts and sex. In the 1970s British films were a lot tamer than European fare. Hardcore porn movies played mainstream cinemas on the continent, whereas in the UK it was a slightly different story. Prof Paul Racey, a bat expert at the University of Exeter, has witnessed penetrative sex in serotine bats and was sceptical of the findings. “Why would they want to mate without intromission, which runs the risk of ‘wasting’ semen?” he said. But he conceded that given recent revelations about bat sex, he had to be open-minded.

I don't care if anybody gets sniffy about Mary's films, because they're actually hugely culturally significant. These movies kept the British movie industry going through some pretty dark times - I absolutely believe they deserve to be restored, so I'm thrilled to bits about it. They look better now than ever.

I think it's a nice bookend to Mary's career and I'm very proud that it's part of the set.
